Types of Numbers

There are a few types of numbers that are mentioned in the exam that you need to know about:

• Counting Numbers - positive whole numbers (1, 2, 3...). Symbolised by Z+.
• Natural Numbers - Counting numbers and zero (0, 1, 2, 3...). Symbolised by N.
• Integers - All whole numbers: (-2, -1, 0, 1, 2...). Symbolised by Z.
• Rational Numbers - m ⁄ n where m and n are integers (n ≠ 0) e.g. 2 ⁄ 3, -15 ⁄ 7. Symbolised by Q.
• Real Numbers - Rational and irrational numbers e.g. π, (√3 + 6), -5 ⁄ 7, 6. Symbolised by R.
