January 2005 - Question 1

We're going to treat this inequality as a basic algebraic equation. This is where the exam board tries to trick you to thinking something is harder than it actually is! The < sign can just be treated as an = sign.
First, we're going to expand the brackets on the left side.

2x - 6 < 6x + 15

Now we're going to get all like terms on one side, so we're going to put all the x's on the right and the numbers on the left.

-6 - 15 < 6x - 2x

As you can see, you just need to add or take the terms from each other for the next step.

-21 < 4x

It would be easier for us to put the x on the left side, so we're going to swap the two terms over. (Remember, we need to change the sign round too).

4x > -21

Now we just need to find what x is.

x > -21/4
