Types of Data

Categorical or Qualitative

• Categorical and qualitative data are in categories or classes.

Here's an example of categorical/qualitative data:

Numerical or Quantitative Data

Variable
The variable is the different data you get in each sample, for example: the score you get when you roll an ordinary die. It's usually a capital letter, e.g. X. Sometimes, the letter can change depending on what you are finding, for example, T for temperature. Each value is usually the lower case letter, e.g. x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.

Discrete & Continuous Data
Discrete variables are usually within certain limits. Examples: scores on a die, number of goals a football team scores, shoe size, height of a person.
Continuous variables can go on to an infinite value. Examples: speed, mass, temperature, speed.
